A 5-week coaching course for intermediate or above skiers/riders looking to get into ski touring and ski mountaineering. This is geared for early season so that you can get set up to become independent and know what to practice through the season. Climbing/ski alpine skills included.
Dates: Field: Sundays: July 11, 18, 25, August 1, August 8. Zoom: Tuesday nights 7.30-9pm starting July 6
Consists of 1 day a week in the field Plus 1.5 hours/ week on a zoom call with specific skills training in preparation for the weekend field session.
Zoom calls include:1.5hrs Equipment planning Packing (includes carrying gear on packs) Planning and preparation - weather, avalanche forecasts, where to get information, alternatives Navigation Technical gear and skills: crevasse rescue kits, ice screws, snow stakes
Field days include:
Snow safety and avalanche terrain evaluation Companion rescue Snowpack evaluation and tests Route finding Decision making Ski and split board tours to objectives in the Craigieburn and Arthurs Pass Snow anchors, basic crevasse rescue Crampon and ice axe use
Field - general tours 1 instructor: 6 participants
Full course - 5 zooms plus 5 field days = $1350
We will always go somewhere as the instructors have tricks for training regardless of the weather. Some skills may be covered ahead of time - eg crevasse rescue covered early on in course on a ‘lesser weather’ day.
- Full refund less 15% deposit (admin fee) if you cancel more than 21 days prior to start.
- No refund if you cancel 21 days or less prior to start.
- If the trip is postponed due to weather conditions on day one, a refund less 15%.
